Sandwiches for fishermen

Sara Norbury sitting at deskCooking on a kibbutz (a collective farm) in Israel has been Sara Norbury's favourite experience as a volunteer so far, where she made sandwiches for fishermen who fished on the Sea of Galilei.

The fishermen loved the little handwritten notes I wrote for them hidden under the plastic wrap. My dad did this for me when I was a little girl and I always used to tear off the wrapping to see what he’d written on the way to school (and the fishermen did the same).

Sara has been volunteering on and off for about 20 years. Having volunteered for about eight different organisations, she has had some wonderful experiences and has shared many of her skills with different communities.

From teaching Sudanese refugees English to mentoring homeless young women to developing a communications strategy for artists in the Nicholas Building in Melbourne, the most rewarding part of volunteering for Sara has been experiencing new places and meeting people she would never have access to normally.

The best way I've gone about finding volunteer opportunities in the past has been by either cold calling organisations I'm interested in helping or searching on the internet.

Sara would next like to donate her time as a volunteer to support Project Respect, a non-profit community-based organisation that aims to empower and support women in the sex industry including women trafficked to Australia.
