Chic Clique at Lower Plenty Cricket Club
Fran Hurst has implemented a female's only membership designed to invite and include more females at the Lower Plenty Cricket Club – as players, committee members, coaches, canteen ladies and supporters. Read Fran's story.
Fran Hurst initially got involved with Lower Plenty Cricket Club when her son and husband started playing there.
As she attended her post-match game celebrations in the clubrooms, a silence came over everyone—Fran noticed she was the only female in the clubrooms at the time. From that moment she knew things had to change.
By joining the club's committee, the idea of implementing a female team into the club was thrown around, as well as developing a new female friendly culture. Two years down the track, they have accomplished their recruitment of female members as players, committee members, coaches, canteen ladies and supporters.
'Chic Clique' was formed as a female's only membership. It was designed to invite and include more females. It provided the ladies, sisters, aunties, grandmothers and friends with an exclusive opportunity to belong to the club. First year membership for the ladies includes a benefit card, discounts to local businesses, an exclusive piece of club merchandise and entry to two ladies-only social events.
Fran sees cricket as a game that allows girls to be involved in a team environment, helping build and maintain an individual's self-esteem. 'Many females don't realise that they can truly play and get involved in the cricket club. And when they give it a go, it makes our club an entertaining, dynamic and fun place to be,' she said.
'That is why girls should get involved in cricket!'
Over the next five years, Fran will be working hard to develop junior girl's cricket, whether it be with Lower Plenty Cricket Club, Diamond Valley Cricket Association or the North Metro Cowgirls and North East Falcons representative teams. Her aspiration is that, when cricket season starts, parents will automatically think about enrolling their daughter/s into a girl's cricket program and the women will engage as volunteers at their local club.
