Monkami is a community organisation situated in Croydon, east of Melbourne, which provides support for adults with an intellectual disability. By using a Victorian Government Volunteer Small Grant, Monkami were able to support their participants to form a volunteer team - the Monkami Army - to help people and organisations in the local area.
The Monkami Army went about identifying needs of local organisations and found assistance was needed with:
- Gardening and kitchen help for a local church
- Delivering meals on wheels
- Supporting libraries for the local council
- Helping isolated seniors with small tasks such as shopping
Working as a team, the Army offered their assistance with an aim to increase participants' confidence, self worth and community awareness.
The opportunity to build new friendships and skills and support the local community with enthusiastic volunteers helped to inspire community members not only to join in and support the Army directly but to volunteer in their own area of interest, leading to more volunteers in the Maroondah region.
