A young boy makes a mark in a football game

One of the original junior clubs, Berwick Junior Football Club has steadily grown over the years. There are now over 420 boys and girls playing in 18 teams across the under–9 to under–16 competitions. With the size of the club, it has successfully separated its volunteers into three levels: a committee level, a team level, and its players.

After recently opening up the committee with more general positions, the club now has 22 parents on the general committee, in addition to five Executive Committee positions. These roles take care of:

  • marketing
  • sponsorship
  • registrations
  • first aid
  • team management
  • merchandise
  • events
  • catering.

In ensuring the effectiveness of the committee, members are encouraged to nominate a 'successor' at the end of their two year rotation, mentoring them where possible to ensure an easy transition.

Every week, each team's manager completes a weekly roster ensuring that each parent has the opportunity to participate on game day. Everyone is able to get involved with their child by taking on necessary jobs, like boundary and goal umpiring, carrying water, timekeeping, escorting umpires and supplying the lollies and oranges.

Each team has also appointed a team committee member. This person can represent the committee at each game, and has the opportunity to become involved in decision making at full committee meetings.

Finally, the Berwick Junior Football Club also ensures that their players become involved, both in the club and throughout the community. As part of the Leadership Program, players from the under–15 and under–16 teams develop leadership attributes off the field by helping in, and around, the club.

To meet the criteria of the program, participants can mentor junior players, volunteer at club events or complete four hours of volunteer service around the club (amongst other activities). Players who complete the program receive a certificate, trophy and a cash prize at a special presentation at the end of the season.
